PEYRONIE’S DISEASE

Peryonie’s disease presents as a deformity in the penis such as a ‘bend’ which may point up, down, or to either side or the penis may have an ‘hourglass’ appearance. The prevalence of peyronie’s varies with rates between 0.4-20.3% of men.  Peyronie’s can occur due to trauma to the penis. Peyronie’s disease is more common in men who have diabetes or erectile dysfunction, in men who smoke, drink excessively and in men who have had pelvic surgery, such as prostatectomy. Peyronie’s disease is also more common in men who have dupuytren’s contracture.

Peyronie’s disease is caused by plaque formation in the normally elastic lining of the erectile tubes in the penis which results in a curvature of the penis, subsequently making some forms of sexual activity difficult. The plaque can often be felt and in the early phase can sometimes cause painful erections.

Your description, physical examination and sometimes penile ultrasound or penile doppler is required to assess the severity of peyronie’s.

Treatment is aimed at preventing the deformity from worsening and maintaining good erectile function. Treatment often involves multiple interventions and mechanical devices such as traction devices or vacuum erectile devices to reduce the curvature and prevent it from worsening. The results of low-intensity shockwave therapy are limited, there are some injectable treatments which may be of benefit but are very costly in Australia currently. For severe, stable peyronie’s disease surgical intervention to correct the curvature can be performed by a urologist.
